How to cut acrylic with a table saw

I should apply a healthy fear and reverence while using a table saw.

Although it is one of the most powerful tools in a woodworker’s arsenal, when abused, it can be harmful.

Table saws cause over 30 thousand injuries per year in the United States alone, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Research, with kickbacks being one of the leading causes of accidents.

In this post, we’ll go over how to prevent kickback while using your table saw.

Cut-to-size acrylic plastic for finding professional

Cutting acrylic isn’t always the easiest thing to do. There are a lot of things to consider when deciding on the best approach, and there’s always the risk of making a mistake that will ruin the acrylic–or even cause injury.

As a result, many consumers choose to buy acrylic plastic that has already been cut to size.

Your acrylic can be professionally finished and cut with high precision if you have your Plexiglas cut-to-size before purchase.

Cutting Plexiglas acrylic with a jigsaw

To begin, use a marker to draw the desired design onto the plastic, just as you did with the other methods. Then, to avoid cracking, line these designs with painter’s tape.

Ideally, clamps should lock both sides of the plastic to the table, but if that isn’t possible, thick wood or another heavy object would suffice.

This is to prevent the Plexiglas from vibrating, which could cause imperfections and injury.

Jigsaws can cut dense sheets of plastic, but they’re better for cutting curves in plastic for items like circular Plexiglas’s windows.

Make sure you’re using a fine-toothed blade, preferably one made for cutting plastic.

After that, put the jigsaw in the topmost region of the acrylic board, but make sure you can access it comfortably.

Then, following the instructions you marked earlier, pull the jigsaw towards your body. Pull the jigsaw back out the way it came and reorient the acrylic sheet if you get stuck at an unusual angle.

Then cut again from a different angle.

Next, mark the area where you want to cut the Plexiglas’s or use a straightedge to help direct your saw in a straight line.

Then, as the cutting process starts, apply painter’s tape to the sides of the lines to provide extra protection against cracks and chips.

Using foam insulation to minimize vibrations in the plastic sheet before cutting to prevent cracks or rough edges.

Then, at a slow pace, cut the plastic in a straight line. Not only is this the safest choice for your personal protection, but it also avoids rough edges. If you cut too slowly, the plastic will grind at you, potentially causing cracks and chips.

If at all necessary, use a diagram to ensure a perfectly straight line – cutting freehand increases the risk of making a mistake. Cutting thick sheets of Plexiglas’s acrylic with a table saw is the most common process.

If the table saw operator has previously cut wood or another material with it, the cutting process will be relatively easy. A 10″ plastic cutting saw blade is the easiest blade to use.

Although it’s detrimental to your job, you can prevent it by making crosscuts in two steps. When crosscutting acrylic sheets on a table saw, the corners will chip because that is where the sheet’s weakest point is located.

Also, to prevent chipping, start the cut on one end of the sheet and then flip the sheet to finish the cut on the opposite side.

Safety precautions when cutting acrylic sheet

To shield your eyes from smashed acrylic, always wear safety glasses. Cutting acrylic sheet releases vapors that can irritate your respiratory system.

So it’s also necessary to work with it in a well-ventilated region.
