Buying guide – How to choose the best table saws?
The most important assumptions
Deciding which table saw to buy is not as simple as it seems, even if the models available on the market seem to have almost all of more or less the same performance, in reality they tend to differ especially in terms of the level of precision in cutting, the quality of the materials. manufacturing and assembly.
To understand how to choose a good table saw, therefore, it is important to establish the type of applications for which you intend to use it and the volume of work that the tool will have to face.
As for applications, the table saw is usually used to make straight cuts in length of wood and derivatives, but some models are also capable of cutting plastics and metals.
As a result, it is mainly used for joinery and carpentry work, but there are smaller versions that are specially designed for precision work.
In summary, therefore, the main choice discriminants are represented by the size of the appliance, its quality level and the type of services offered. On the basis of these parameters, the prices of table saws currently on the market can vary from about 100 euros for the cheapest models, intended for hobbyists, up to 1,000 euros and over models designed to meet professional needs.
The table saws for hobbyists
In the cheaper range of the market, namely the one that goes from about 100 to 450 euros, mainly table saws intended for non-intensive hobby use are included.
In this range the models made by the most famous companies in the sector are very popular, such as the German Einhell and Bosch and the Japanese Ryobi, just to give an example, this type of stationary power tools are in fact characterized by a low and relatively accessible price.
The further advantage of cheap table saws, even if not exactly common to all models, is a decent structural quality, while the shortcomings are given by an assembly that often turns out to be rough, especially as regards certain elements in particular, such as the cutting guides and extensions for the worktop.
Consequently, the classic “defects” presented by this type of table saw are above all the poor precision, due to the slight play of the guides, and the vibrations generated by the structure as a consequence of the less accurate assembly.
Despite these small limitations, hobby table saws are ideal for those who do not have great needs and make occasional and non-intensive use, for DIY and for occasional home maintenance work. Also in the same category also include mini table saws, special models mainly intended for model making and precision work on small pieces.
Despite falling in the economic price range, however, the mini table saws are distinguished by a level of precision in cutting that is far higher than the standard hobby models.
The table saws with professional performance
On the other hand, in the price range ranging from 450 euros up to 1,000 euros and beyond, the models that offer the best features are concentrated, both in terms of the type of assembly and the level of precision in cutting, and for the versatility of use and for the type of materials on which it is possible to work.
The table saws that fall into this range, in fact, are assembled with care and the pieces are not game, especially the cutting guides, the motors are more powerful and performing and also the cutting functions are superior. They also differ in the possible presence of additional integrated systems, such as laser guides, gradual start-up and protection systems, which are often absent in the cheaper models.
For a higher price, this type of table saw offers professional performance; consequently, therefore, they are intended for a range of users that is made up of the most expert and demanding hobbyists as well as the craftsmen and professionals who use it mainly for their work.
What is a table saw?
The table saw is nothing more than the stationary version of the circular saw, and is a tool used for cutting different materials, starting with wood and its derivatives.
By changing the type of blade, in fact, or depending on the type of saw and its power, it is also possible to cut plastics, metals and other composite materials of different origins.
Its invention dates back to 1775, by the carpenter Walter Taylor, and was specially designed to perform straight cuts only, and unlike circular saws that are operated manually, in table saws it is the piece to be cut that is pushed against the blade. which is in a fixed position.
The cutting thickness can vary according to the type of machine, but usually rarely exceeds 8 or 10 centimeters at the most, which is why it is mainly suitable for cutting laminates, profiles, panels and pieces with reduced thickness.
What is a table saw used for?
As mentioned in the previous answer, the table saw can only make straight cuts in wood and other materials. Its applications therefore fall above all in the field of joinery, carpentry and construction. They are ideal for cutting pieces with a reduced thickness but with a long length; depending on the size of the instrument, however, they can also be used in other sectors.
In precision mechanics and model making, for example, mini table saws are very popular; they are in all respects identical to normal table saws except for the dimensions and the speed generated by their motor, which is far superior.
Mini table saws can easily cut wood, plastic and metal to create small pieces, so they are used by watchmakers, dental technicians and other professionals who specialize in the construction or repair of small mechanical and electronic objects. They are also widely used in the hobby field, for the manufacture of small artifacts and for modeling, especially the naval one.
In the industrial field, on the other hand, suitable table saws are used for cutting large pieces, while the standard models are widely used both for hobby applications such as do-it-yourself and bricolage, and for crafts and professional use.
How to use a table saw
How to build a table circular saw
If you have a small equipped workshop and you can count on a good reserve of recycled materials, depending on the circumstances it could be more or less advantageous to try to recycle them for the creation of a table saw. The simplest procedure, among the several possible options, is to adapt a normal circular saw to a stationary structure.
For the latter it is possible to use steel profiles for the base support structure, but in this case you will have to consider the use of a welding machine, while if you have the possibility to recover an industrial case you can do without using other equipment.
Using the industrial crate as a base, therefore, it will be sufficient to obtain a solid wooden table capable of covering at least three sides of the crate. At this point it will be sufficient to take the appropriate measurements and drill a hole on the table using the circular saw itself, then shape it in such a way as to allow the blade to protrude from its surface and to be able to tilt it 45 degrees, in order to perform both perpendicular cuts and angled.
Once the hole has been made, simply fix the circular saw by bolting the plate to the table, turn the latter over and place it on the case, making sure to leave one side uncovered for 15-20 centimeters. This will leave enough space for the power cable to pass through, and you can also use the dead space in the crate as a receptacle for quick disposal of cutting residues.
To create the cutting guide, on the other hand, simply overlap the table with additional pieces of wood cut and shaped to match the appropriate measurements, the guide must be about 20 centimeters wide but longer than the table, in order to add the pieces necessary to hold it in position and, at the same time, leave it free to slide in order to adapt to the size of the piece to be cut.
An abundant spray of silicone spray on the upper surface of the table and on the lower surface of the guide, before fixing it, will help the latter to flow more fluently and effectively.
The circular saw: characteristics and applications
Let’s take a closer look at one of the most versatile types of saws, from the large specimens of the industrial sector to the micro ones intended for precision work.
The circular saw is defined in this way precisely because it uses disk-shaped blades, the diameter of which can vary according to the standard possessed by the model and its dimensions; the first example of a circular saw was invented in 1775 by the English carpenter and engineer Walter Taylor.
At a young age Walter Taylor, serving in the Royal English Navy, was intrigued by the rigging blocks used on the ships which, being handmade and therefore not squared with precision, caused problems and exposed sailors to serious risks. Thanks to the invention of the circular saw, Taylor was able to produce precisely squared rigging blocks, greatly increasing their quality and above all safety, which earned him a supply contract with the Royal Navy.
The evolution of the saw
Over the years and thanks to technological progress, circular saws have evolved on three different paths that have originated as many versions of the same, which in addition to wood are also able to cut plastic and metals. The three different types currently in use, therefore, are the portable circular saw, the table saw and the radial miter saw.
The portable models are distinguished by their compact size and low weight, in order to be light and easy to handle as they must be gripped and made to slide freehand along the cutting line of the piece; the latter is placed on a work surface and secured to the guides, so as to remain immobile and allow a precise cut.
Bench saws, on the other hand, are stationary machines where the circular blade is placed in a fixed position, usually in the immediate vicinity of the engine, and it is possible to move it only to adjust the angle of inclination; while it is the piece to be cut that is made to slide along its toothed edge with the aid of a trolley, or simply by pushing it by hand along the blade after having secured it to the cutting guides.
Even the radial cutting-off machines are stationary machines, unlike the table saws however, the blade-motor unit is placed on an articulated arm placed above the work surface; the piece to be cut then goes back to being positioned on the work surface, secured to the guides so as to remain immobile, while the cut takes place by lowering the blade directly on the piece and making it slide on the appropriate tracks.
The main technical feature that distinguishes circular saws is the blade, as previously mentioned, the diameter of which can vary from 140 to about 315 millimeters depending on the type; it goes without saying that the models with the largest blade are mainly designed for professional use, on construction sites or in joinery and carpentry workshops.
The circular table saws with blades up to 254 mm, on the other hand, and portable circular saws, which usually use 140 mm blades, are mostly intended for the hobby sector, but depending on the build quality and performance offered by the various specimens may also be suitable for non-intensive professional use.
The blade is driven by a universal electric motor with one or more reduction stages, depending on the type chosen, which sets a variable speed in an interval between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm.
On the other hand, circular spindle saws, which fall into the category of precision micro tools, are an exception. These blades can have a diameter ranging from 18 to 33 millimeters approximately, and can be adjusted at speeds between 5,000 and 20,000 revolutions per minute.
Make the best choice
As you may have easily guessed, at this point, even the best table saw is certainly not suitable for cutting high thicknesses. The structural scheme of the machine, in fact, characterized by the motor placed almost close to the blade, ensures that only a small portion of the same protrudes from the arm or from the work surface.
Circular saws can only cut pieces up to a maximum thickness of 140mm with perpendicular inclination, and since the blade can be tilted to make angled cuts up to 45 °, the maximum thickness for the latter is reduced to approximately 113mm. These measures are obviously not standard, and as for those of the blades they vary according to the type of circular saw.
The table saws in the hobby sector, for example, have a cutting depth ranging from 30-35 millimeters of the smallest specimens up to 80-100 millimeters, while those of the artisanal and professional sector are characterized by a cutting depth ranging from the 100 and 140 millimeters; as regards portable circular saws and micro tools, on the other hand, the cutting depth is further reduced, oscillating between 40 and 90 millimeters depending on the model and size.
The same is true for the radial miter saws where the blade-motor unit, although placed in the reverse position, usually has the same characteristics as that of the table saws, the only substantial difference between the two types of machine lies in the maximum length of the pieces. workable.
The one allowed by miter saws, in fact, is reduced due to the particular design of the guides, which in addition to making the cut precise, have the task of locking the piece. Bench saws, on the other hand, do not place any limitations on the length of the workable pieces, since it is the latter that are mobilized and pushed along the work surface.
The intended use
Processing freshly cut logs requires large stationary machines, so industrial table circular saws are very large and heavy and are only used after band saws have done the bulk of the work cutting the logs into smaller slices.
Consequently, the largest market segment is the hobby and artisan one; in this range are concentrated most of the table saws, radial miter saws and portable circular saws, with a further subdivision based on price and quality aimed at distinguishing between the specimens intended exclusively for amateur use and those also suitable for craft and professional use.
Micro-tools, on the other hand, have a different market niche, since they are used in precision mechanics and therefore affect a range of users that is less broad but far more experienced and highly specialized, both in the professional and amateur sectors.
