They are designed to be used with the Tacklife mouse, or with other delta sanders whose sanding pad measures 140 x 140 x 100mm. The only flaw, as mentioned before, is the limited durability; they are in fact cheap sandpaper for non-intensive amateur use.

Pros

Value for money: The cost is affordable and well proportioned to the quality of the paper, and it is also cheaper than the average standard spare parts for delta sanders.

Kit: The pack includes ten 40-grit papers, ten 80-grit papers, ten 120-grit papers and ten 140-grit papers, for a total of forty abrasive papers.

Cons

Durability: Despite the high resistance, the abrasive part tends to wear out quite quickly; but the rest is understandable since they are cheap spare parts.

 6. BOSHCRAFT 50 Pcs Premium Sandpaper,

The Bosch sandpaper roll is not only the favorite of the user group made up of hobbyists and craftsmen, but it is also the cheapest of the different products we have compared.

It only ranks sixth in our ranking, however, for the simple reason that it is a standard package with a single 80-grit roll, 93mm by 5 meters in length, so it’s a specific product suitable only for jobs. roughing.

The quality of the abrasive is of an excellent level, both in terms of resistance and duration; the paper is specific for wood, but according to buyers it can also be used for other types of materials. The only flaw of Bosch sandpaper is that, despite its resistance, it is quite fragile when folded; therefore you have to be careful in fixing it to the supports.

Pros

Bosch quality: The sandpaper in question is especially appreciated by professionals and craftsmen; its characteristics of high resistance and durability, in fact, make it ideal for intensive use.

Price: The cost is very affordable, even if the package includes a single roll of paper measuring 5 meters long by 93 centimeters wide.

Versatile: Despite being a standard sandpaper for wood, it also offers decent results on other types of materials, such as paint and enamels for example.

The one produced by the WolfCraft company, on the other hand, is a roll similar to the Bosch one but with different sizes; the type examined, in fact, is of grain size 120 and measures 115 millimeters by 4 meters in length.

Unlike Bosch paper, moreover, WolfCraft is a sandpaper with velcro, so it has the advantage of being able to be attached to the support very easily, especially if it is the backing pad of a sander; in fact it is recommended above all as a spare part for orbital sanders. The abrasive mixture is based on corundum, so it is especially suitable for wood.

The quality is also excellent, but in any case slightly lower than the Bosch, both in terms of performance and durability. The only flaw, unfortunately, is the absence of holes for dust extraction; therefore, if necessary, the problem must be solved by practicing them alone, with the aid of a cutter.

Pros

Velcro: The back velcro layer makes it much easier to attach to the holder, it also increases stability and prevents the paper from moving or sliding during use.

For wood: WolfCraft sandpaper roll is also a standard product for wood; the abrasive mixture, in fact, is based on corundum and therefore not very suitable for surfaces that are too hard.

For sanders: The velcro layer makes it particularly suitable as a replacement for orbital sanders with rectangular pad, but it can be cut to fit also round or delta pads.

Cons

How to choose the best sandpaper

Deciding which sandpaper to buy is not that difficult, especially if you have a minimum of knowledge about the abrasive materials and the most suitable applications based on the grain; the more complex factor, on the other hand, is that of convenience, and now we are going to explain why.

For manual use or with the sander

Sandpaper is an accessory that lends itself to a wide range of applications, from roughing to finishing work, consequently there are numerous products on the market that differ not only in grain, but also in the type of support and other characteristics, such as the shape and the possible presence of velcro.

The most common formats are rolls and rectangular sheets, whose width can vary from 90 to 120 millimeters approximately depending on the case; this measurement, in fact, corresponds more or less to the standard width of the pads of orbital sanders and of the rollers of belt sanders.

To understand how to choose a good sandpaper, therefore, you first need to know whether it will be used by hand or with a sander. In the first case there are no particular restrictions, except those relating to the type of material on which to work; if, on the other hand, you have to buy sandpaper for a sander, you will have to be careful to choose those with a tear-resistant backing, but above all to the shape and size, which can vary according to the type of sander.

The different applications

Some sandpaper can be used only on certain types of material, while others are characterized by a much more versatile abrasive mixture and suitable for working on the most disparate materials.

It is not a strict and universal standard, of course, but one of the simplest ways to recognize sandpaper at a glance is the color, which is given to the abrasive component; brick red, for example, is usually used for those intended for working wood, stucco, plasters and paints, while gray is used for “universal” sandpaper.

The shades of color, in turn, are indicative of the grain; the latter is printed on the back of the paper and on the packaging, but it can be easily recognized by sight thanks to the intensity of the color: the brighter the hue, the lower the grain, consequently those with very fine grain are also those with the darkest shade.

The choice of grain, on the other hand, depends on the type of work to be performed; for roughing and for removing old layers of paint, coarse-grained sandpaper must be used, intermediate-grained sandpaper must be used for sanding and grinding, while the finer grains must be chosen for polishing and finishing.

The economic factor

Sandpaper costs relatively little, but its economic impact is determined by the type of packaging and, above all, by the frequency of use. If you enjoy doing DIY in your free time, or you have a passion for fretwork, for model making or for another artistic or craft activity, as a result you will have a limited consumption rate and a greater need for sandpaper. versatile, able to work with all types of material. In this case, then, you can safely orient yourself on a set of universal cards, the cost of which is between about 10 and 15 euros.

Artisans and professionals, on the other hand, have a much higher consumption rate; in this case, therefore, if you want to save something you have to prefer packs of sandpaper in the form of rolls: on the market there are 4, 5, 10 meters in length or more, depending on the manufacturer. The rolls can be sold individually or in set packs; the latter are decidedly more expensive, but with a view to frequent use they allow greater savings over time.

Which grit of sandpaper for wood

The type of abrasive

To work on wood you must first choose the sandpaper with the most suitable abrasive substance, which is usually glass or emery; the best versions are also easily recognizable thanks to the color of the abrasive mixture, which is brick red.

Furthermore, the shades of color vary according to the grain; a brighter red, for example, indicates a coarse grain, the darker the hue and the finer the grain. The difference in the shades of color was given by the manufacturers precisely to allow craftsmen and hobbyists to distinguish the grain visually, even if not all sandpaper on the market follows this standard and some may have different colors.

Wood grains

The type of processing to be performed greatly affects the choice of grain, usually with wood sandpaper is used above all to rough up the surfaces of the cut edges, or to remove the layers of old paint.

In this case it is preferable to use sandpaper with a fairly coarse grain; to scrape off the paint, for example, an 80 or 60 is fine, depending on the thickness of the layer to be removed and its type. For roughing and smoothing the cut edges of the pieces of wood, however, grits from 120 to 180 are good, for grinding and sanding, however, it is better to choose grits from 240 to 320 or even higher, depending on the case.

The finer grains, i.e. those from 800 upwards, are mainly suitable for polishing and finishing work, therefore they are to be used only at the end of certain processes.

The use of power tools

The choice of grain to work the wood must also be subordinated to the way of using the sandpaper. In fact, in manual use, both the pressure and the speed of the passages can be dosed adequately; if electric tools such as orbital sanders are used, on the other hand, even by dosing the applied pressure, the speed of the passages is much higher.

Consequently, sanders are not very suitable for working with very fine-grained sandpaper, used for finishing; by their nature, however, they are much more effective in roughing and smoothing surfaces, and in removing old layers of paint.

Frequent questions

What is sandpaper used for?

Sandpaper is an accessory that is used both in the home and amateur and professional environments, and is used to carry out roughing and smoothing of surfaces, cleaning, removing enamels and varnishes, or polishing and polishing.

The grain affects the type of work for which it can be used, consequently there are different types; according to the standards drawn up by the European federation of abrasive manufacturers, in fact, there are over thirty types of grain, which for convenience are indicated by a simple number, starting from 12 up to 7,000, which defines the consistency of the grain.

The 12 grit indicates the coarser abrasive, while the 7.000 has a very fine consistency; the number is printed on the back of the card, so you can easily identify it. The grain therefore affects the type of use to which the sandpaper can be destined; those numbered from 12 to 80, for example, are especially suitable for roughing work while the finer ones, from 800 to 7,000, are intended for grinding and polishing.

Depending on the abrasive mixture, then, the sandpaper can be universal, that is, suitable for working on all types of material, or specific, such as for example the one designed for wood.

How is sandpaper made?

Sandpaper is basically composed of two parts: the abrasive mixture and the support on which it is spread; both components may vary according to the type and intended use.

For the abrasive mixture, for example, a wide range of materials can be used: glass, quartz, corundum, zirconium, hercynite (more commonly known as emery), silicon carbide, boron carbide, aluminum oxides, chromium or iron, diamond and many more.

The type of abrasive used greatly affects the type of material the sandpaper will be able to work on. Those based on silicon carbide, for example, are excellent for glass, porcelain and other similar materials, but are not suitable for ferrous materials; aluminum oxide, on the other hand, is excellent for iron but is not suitable for glass grinding.

The support on which the abrasive mixture is applied can be paper, cardboard, canvas or a mixture of synthetic fibers, depending on the intended use; some sandpaper, in fact, are specially made to be used with motor sanders, therefore they require a particular support which in some cases also has a velcro layer.
