The most requested variants are intended for hobby use, of course, among these the most appreciated by buyers are the Tacklife , a kit of sandpaper for wood with four different grits, and the Anpro , another set consisting of forty pieces and different grits, but they are also suitable for metal, plastic and other materials.

8 Best Sandpaper for Drywall [ 2022 Updated ]

Cheap sandpaper is the most popular, as can be easily deduced from the products in the ranking. There are also professional abrasive papers, of course, for those with more specific needs.

1.24PCS Sand Paper Variety Pack Sandpaper 12 Grits Assorted

Sandpaper for wood remains one of the most widespread types and which have the widest demand. In fact, according to the opinions of buyers, and also based on the high number of pieces sold online, one of the best sandpaper of 2021 is the one produced by the company Tacklife.

This kit, specifically, is made up of papers of four different grits: 40, 80, 120 and 240, with ten pieces of each size for a total of forty abrasive papers. The quality is average, especially as regards the characteristics of durability, but the high thickness makes them particularly resistant and difficult to tear.

24PCS Sand Paper Variety Pack Sandpaper 12 Grits Assorted for Wood Metal Sanding, Wet Dry Sandpaper 120/150/180/240/320/400/600/800/1000/1500/2500/3000 Grit

  • 【Handy Size and Easy to Identify】All the sand papers are in 9 x 3.6 inches, you also can cut it into...

They are designed to be used with the Tacklife mouse, or with other delta sanders whose sanding pad measures 140 x 140 x 100mm. The only flaw, as mentioned before, is the limited durability; they are in fact cheap sandpaper for non-intensive amateur use.

Value for money: The cost is affordable and well proportioned to the quality of the paper, and it is also cheaper than the average standard spare parts for delta sanders.

Thickness: the support layer is made up of a mixture of resin and flannel fibers, moreover it has a fairly consistent thickness, which considerably increases the tear resistance.

Kit: The pack includes ten 40-grit papers, ten 80-grit papers, ten 120-grit papers and ten 140-grit papers, for a total of forty abrasive papers.

Durability: Despite the high resistance, the abrasive part tends to wear out quite quickly; but the rest is understandable since they are cheap spare parts.

 2. 3M Garnet Sandpaper,

If you are wondering where to buy sandpaper 2000 or with an even finer grain, possibly at low prices and suitable for all types of surfaces, then we suggest you take a look at the product kit for the Anpro brand.

Price: The kit includes forty 9 x 23 cm abrasive papers and has a competitive cost to say the least. In fact, it ranks second in our ranking of best-selling products.

 3.Bates- Sanding Sponge, 4 Pack,

The one produced by the well-known brand Silverline is considered the best sandpaper for belt sander among those currently available on the market, even if it is limited by a small defect.

The quality of the Silverline set, in fact, is such as to be able to satisfy even the most demanding professionals both as regards the abrasive material and the resistance of the support, both of excellent level. • Package includes 4 pcs of sanding sponge, 60/80/120/220 grit, 1pc of each grit.
  • Bates sanding sponges use high-density sponges as base material, made from high-quality brown corundum...

The only flaw of these abrasive belts lies in their size, which does not fall within common standards and, depending on the sander used, can differ by about one centimeter more or less. To make it compatible with the step of non-Silverline belt sanders, therefore, it must be cut and glued again in order to adapt it to the needs of the case.

Professional quality: The Silverline company is known not only for its power tools but above all for its high-quality accessories and consumables, which are also suitable for professional needs.

Resistant: The Silverline sandpaper tape also stands out for its excellent characteristics of durability and resistance, which make the quality-price ratio of the product even more advantageous.

Ethically Sustainable: Another point in favor of the Silverline company is its commitment to upholding human rights and ethical standards, especially in the workplace.

Dimensions: The width of the belts does not follow common standards, so it may happen that you have to cut them to fit the pitch of the sander, if it does not match.

The S&R set is also of professional quality, and consists of sixty pieces in total, divided into ten pieces for each grain: P40, P60, P80, P120, P180 and P240; obviously it is delta sandpaper, therefore suitable for this specific type of sander.

Unlike the Tacklife delta sandpaper, which we examined previously, the one produced by the German company S&R is slightly larger, has Velcro on the back and is designed to be separated into two pieces; besides wooden and painted surfaces, it is also suitable for steel and other non-ferrous metals, plastics, polymers and hollow materials.

A delta: This is a specific sandpaper for delta sanders, complete with holes for dust extraction and separation notch for the base.

Versatile set: The set offers sixty pieces divided into six groups of ten, each with a specific grit starting from 40 up to 240, so it is extremely versatile and allows you to perform both roughing and sanding jobs.

Professional: The quality of the S&R paper is professional, so it is also suitable for intensive and prolonged use.

Sizes: Also in this case the measurements are not exactly standard and the paper may not adapt perfectly to all types of delta sanders on the market.

 6. BOSHCRAFT 50 Pcs Premium Sandpaper,

The Bosch sandpaper roll is not only the favorite of the user group made up of hobbyists and craftsmen, but it is also the cheapest of the different products we have compared.

It only ranks sixth in our ranking, however, for the simple reason that it is a standard package with a single 80-grit roll, 93mm by 5 meters in length, so it’s a specific product suitable only for jobs. roughing.

BOSHCRAFT 50 Pcs Premium Sandpaper, 1/4 Sandpaper Sheets 80/120/150/220/320/400 Grit Assortment Sandpaper for Wood Metal Automotive Palm Sanders 5.5" x 4.5"

  • [2× longer lasting] Highly abrasives sandpaper are made of premium aluminum oxide for a sharp cut and...

The quality of the abrasive is of an excellent level, both in terms of resistance and duration; the paper is specific for wood, but according to buyers it can also be used for other types of materials. The only flaw of Bosch sandpaper is that, despite its resistance, it is quite fragile when folded; therefore you have to be careful in fixing it to the supports.

Bosch quality: The sandpaper in question is especially appreciated by professionals and craftsmen; its characteristics of high resistance and durability, in fact, make it ideal for intensive use.

Price: The cost is very affordable, even if the package includes a single roll of paper measuring 5 meters long by 93 centimeters wide.

Versatile: Despite being a standard sandpaper for wood, it also offers decent results on other types of materials, such as paint and enamels for example.

Stiffness: Bosch sandpaper is tear-resistant but somewhat brittle when bent, so you need to handle it carefully when attaching it to the holder.

7. Fandeli Sandpaper Sheets –

The one produced by the WolfCraft company, on the other hand, is a roll similar to the Bosch one but with different sizes; the type examined, in fact, is of grain size 120 and measures 115 millimeters by 4 meters in length.

Unlike Bosch paper, moreover, WolfCraft is a sandpaper with velcro, so it has the advantage of being able to be attached to the support very easily, especially if it is the backing pad of a sander; in fact it is recommended above all as a spare part for orbital sanders. The abrasive mixture is based on corundum, so it is especially suitable for wood.

The quality is also excellent, but in any case slightly lower than the Bosch, both in terms of performance and durability. The only flaw, unfortunately, is the absence of holes for dust extraction; therefore, if necessary, the problem must be solved by practicing them alone, with the aid of a cutter.

Velcro: The back velcro layer makes it much easier to attach to the holder, it also increases stability and prevents the paper from moving or sliding during use.

For wood: WolfCraft sandpaper roll is also a standard product for wood; the abrasive mixture, in fact, is based on corundum and therefore not very suitable for surfaces that are too hard.

For sanders: The velcro layer makes it particularly suitable as a replacement for orbital sanders with rectangular pad, but it can be cut to fit also round or delta pads.

Holes: Since this is a sandpaper for orbital sanders, remember to drill the appropriate holes for suction before using it.

With the forty-two piece Navaris set we return once again to universal sandpaper, suitable for every type of need and any type of material; it is in fact a kit very similar to the one examined previously, produced for the Anpro brand.

Despite being composed of two more pieces, the Navaris set offers a smaller range of grits, starting from 800 up to 3,000; the dimensions are similar to those of Anpro papers and also the material and characteristics are similar. They are suitable for both dry and wet sanding and on all types of materials from wood to stone, including high strength and synthetic materials, such as polycarbonate.

  • This premium package includes: 50 sheets of mouse detail sander sandpaper in 5 different grades:...
  • The sandpaper size is 140mm*90mm, suitable for the 140mm sander.

The price is slightly higher than the Anpro set; the only downside of Navaris sandpaper, unfortunately, is that they tend to wear out much faster.

Universal: Navaris sandpaper can be used on any type of surface regardless of its hardness: wood, plastic, stone, non-ferrous metals, steel and even polycarbonate.

Set: The package includes 42 pieces and seven different grits: 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000; the sheets can also be cut and shaped according to the needs of the case.

Versatile: Among the various characteristics it possesses there is also waterproofing, so it can be used both dry and wet, and it is also good both for sanding and sharpening and for polishing surfaces.

Durability: The only flaw consists in the limited durability, in fact it tends to wear out more quickly than similar sandpaper produced by other companies.

How to choose the best sandpaper

Deciding which sandpaper to buy is not that difficult, especially if you have a minimum of knowledge about the abrasive materials and the most suitable applications based on the grain; the more complex factor, on the other hand, is that of convenience, and now we are going to explain why.

For manual use or with the sander

Sandpaper is an accessory that lends itself to a wide range of applications, from roughing to finishing work, consequently there are numerous products on the market that differ not only in grain, but also in the type of support and other characteristics, such as the shape and the possible presence of velcro.

The most common formats are rolls and rectangular sheets, whose width can vary from 90 to 120 millimeters approximately depending on the case; this measurement, in fact, corresponds more or less to the standard width of the pads of orbital sanders and of the rollers of belt sanders.

To understand how to choose a good sandpaper, therefore, you first need to know whether it will be used by hand or with a sander. In the first case there are no particular restrictions, except those relating to the type of material on which to work; if, on the other hand, you have to buy sandpaper for a sander, you will have to be careful to choose those with a tear-resistant backing, but above all to the shape and size, which can vary according to the type of sander.

The different applications

Some sandpaper can be used only on certain types of material, while others are characterized by a much more versatile abrasive mixture and suitable for working on the most disparate materials.

It is not a strict and universal standard, of course, but one of the simplest ways to recognize sandpaper at a glance is the color, which is given to the abrasive component; brick red, for example, is usually used for those intended for working wood, stucco, plasters and paints, while gray is used for “universal” sandpaper.

The shades of color, in turn, are indicative of the grain; the latter is printed on the back of the paper and on the packaging, but it can be easily recognized by sight thanks to the intensity of the color: the brighter the hue, the lower the grain, consequently those with very fine grain are also those with the darkest shade.

The choice of grain, on the other hand, depends on the type of work to be performed; for roughing and for removing old layers of paint, coarse-grained sandpaper must be used, intermediate-grained sandpaper must be used for sanding and grinding, while the finer grains must be chosen for polishing and finishing.

The economic factor

Sandpaper costs relatively little, but its economic impact is determined by the type of packaging and, above all, by the frequency of use. If you enjoy doing DIY in your free time, or you have a passion for fretwork, for model making or for another artistic or craft activity, as a result you will have a limited consumption rate and a greater need for sandpaper. versatile, able to work with all types of material. In this case, then, you can safely orient yourself on a set of universal cards, the cost of which is between about 10 and 15 euros.

Artisans and professionals, on the other hand, have a much higher consumption rate; in this case, therefore, if you want to save something you have to prefer packs of sandpaper in the form of rolls: on the market there are 4, 5, 10 meters in length or more, depending on the manufacturer. The rolls can be sold individually or in set packs; the latter are decidedly more expensive, but with a view to frequent use they allow greater savings over time.

Which grit of sandpaper for wood

The type of abrasive

To work on wood you must first choose the sandpaper with the most suitable abrasive substance, which is usually glass or emery; the best versions are also easily recognizable thanks to the color of the abrasive mixture, which is brick red.

Furthermore, the shades of color vary according to the grain; a brighter red, for example, indicates a coarse grain, the darker the hue and the finer the grain. The difference in the shades of color was given by the manufacturers precisely to allow craftsmen and hobbyists to distinguish the grain visually, even if not all sandpaper on the market follows this standard and some may have different colors.

Wood grains

The type of processing to be performed greatly affects the choice of grain, usually with wood sandpaper is used above all to rough up the surfaces of the cut edges, or to remove the layers of old paint.

In this case it is preferable to use sandpaper with a fairly coarse grain; to scrape off the paint, for example, an 80 or 60 is fine, depending on the thickness of the layer to be removed and its type. For roughing and smoothing the cut edges of the pieces of wood, however, grits from 120 to 180 are good, for grinding and sanding, however, it is better to choose grits from 240 to 320 or even higher, depending on the case.

The finer grains, i.e. those from 800 upwards, are mainly suitable for polishing and finishing work, therefore they are to be used only at the end of certain processes.

The use of power tools

The choice of grain to work the wood must also be subordinated to the way of using the sandpaper. In fact, in manual use, both the pressure and the speed of the passages can be dosed adequately; if electric tools such as orbital sanders are used, on the other hand, even by dosing the applied pressure, the speed of the passages is much higher.

Consequently, sanders are not very suitable for working with very fine-grained sandpaper, used for finishing; by their nature, however, they are much more effective in roughing and smoothing surfaces, and in removing old layers of paint.

Frequent questions

What is sandpaper used for?

Sandpaper is an accessory that is used both in the home and amateur and professional environments, and is used to carry out roughing and smoothing of surfaces, cleaning, removing enamels and varnishes, or polishing and polishing.

The grain affects the type of work for which it can be used, consequently there are different types; according to the standards drawn up by the European federation of abrasive manufacturers, in fact, there are over thirty types of grain, which for convenience are indicated by a simple number, starting from 12 up to 7,000, which defines the consistency of the grain.

The 12 grit indicates the coarser abrasive, while the 7.000 has a very fine consistency; the number is printed on the back of the card, so you can easily identify it. The grain therefore affects the type of use to which the sandpaper can be destined; those numbered from 12 to 80, for example, are especially suitable for roughing work while the finer ones, from 800 to 7,000, are intended for grinding and polishing.

Depending on the abrasive mixture, then, the sandpaper can be universal, that is, suitable for working on all types of material, or specific, such as for example the one designed for wood.

How is sandpaper made?

Sandpaper is basically composed of two parts: the abrasive mixture and the support on which it is spread; both components may vary according to the type and intended use.

For the abrasive mixture, for example, a wide range of materials can be used: glass, quartz, corundum, zirconium, hercynite (more commonly known as emery), silicon carbide, boron carbide, aluminum oxides, chromium or iron, diamond and many more.

The type of abrasive used greatly affects the type of material the sandpaper will be able to work on. Those based on silicon carbide, for example, are excellent for glass, porcelain and other similar materials, but are not suitable for ferrous materials; aluminum oxide, on the other hand, is excellent for iron but is not suitable for glass grinding.

The support on which the abrasive mixture is applied can be paper, cardboard, canvas or a mixture of synthetic fibers, depending on the intended use; some sandpaper, in fact, are specially made to be used with motor sanders, therefore they require a particular support which in some cases also has a velcro layer.
